As the travelers prepare for another holiday season, wanderlust is alive and thriving. According to the Fall 2025 Global Rescue Traveler Sentiment and Safety Survey, the world’s most experienced travelers are ready to pack their bags and head out for both domestic and international adventures. Yet, beneath this enthusiasm lies a fascinating divide: between men and women and between US and non-US travelers.

The survey of more than 1,600 Global Rescue current and former members revealed that 54% of respondents plan to travel both internationally and domestically between November and February, confirming that the winter months are no longer a time for hibernation, but for exploration. The details, however, show where wanderlust truly burns brightest: non-US travelers are more than three times as likely as Americans to plan international-only trips (21% vs. 6%), suggesting a stronger global appetite for long-haul travel.

Men also edge out women in their eagerness to travel. Fifty-seven percent of men plan to travel both domestically and abroad, compared to 51% of women. Interestingly, women are slightly more likely to stay home altogether (17% vs. 14%), hinting that while the spirit of adventure is universal, its expression may differ across gender lines.

“The data shows that enthusiasm for global travel remains strong heading into winter, with men and international travelers leading the way,” said Dan Richards, CEO of The Global Rescue Companies and a member of the US Travel and Tourism Advisory Board at the US Department of Commerce.

Japan Tops the Global Travel Wish List

If every traveler could receive one trip as a gift, the destination of choice is clear: Japan reigns supreme, topping the 2025 holiday travel wish list.

The survey found that 24% of all respondents, and 31% of non-US travelers, selected Japan as their dream “travel gift” destination. Japan’s enduring blend of tradition and innovation, from Kyoto’s temples to Tokyo’s neon skylines, continues to captivate travelers seeking both cultural depth and modern allure.

Italy ranked second with 14%, celebrated for its timeless art, cuisine and romance, while New Zealand placed third at 11%, drawing adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. Spain (4%) and France (3%) rounded out the top five.

Gender preferences reveal additional insights: women were more likely to choose France (5%) or Portugal (9%) — destinations known for elegance, culture and relaxation — while men leaned toward Japan and Italy, destinations that balance adventure with refinement.

This gender split underscores that travel dreams are as personal as they are global, shaped by individual values and experiences. While men may chase adrenaline and exploration, women often gravitate toward cultural and restorative journeys.

Travel Gifting: Different Approaches for Men and Women

When it comes to giving the gift of travel, the Global Rescue survey reveals striking differences between men and women. Nearly half of men (48%) said they would give an international trip to their spouse, compared to only 25% of women.

Women, however, take a broader approach to generosity: they are four times more likely than men to gift travel to a friend or neighbor (18% vs. 6%). Interestingly, 39% of all respondents said they would gift a trip to a sibling, a sign of the growing trend toward sibling getaways and multi-generational experiences. Extending the family travel connection, across the board children remain a constant at 17%, reflecting the continued popularity of family-oriented travel.

These patterns suggest that travel is becoming a universal language of connection. Whether it’s a surprise honeymoon in Italy, a ski trip in Japan or a family escape to New Zealand, travelers are increasingly choosing experiences over material gifts.

Where They’d Send First-Time Travelers

If given the chance to send someone abroad for the first time, respondents showed thoughtful discernment, balancing beauty, accessibility and cultural impact.

New Zealand emerged as the top choice (21%) for first-time international travelers. Its welcoming atmosphere, English-speaking environment and cinematic landscapes make it an ideal introduction to the wider world.

Next came the Amalfi Coast in Italy (16%), where history, cuisine and scenery blend into a quintessential European experience. Kyoto, Japan (9%), captured third place for its tranquil temples and immersive cultural encounters, followed by London (8%), the perennial gateway for first-timers seeking a mix of familiarity and global flair.

Regional and demographic differences were stark. Non-US travelers showed a stronger preference for Asia and South America, choosing Kyoto (15%) and Machu Picchu (8%), while Americans leaned toward the Amalfi Coast (19%) and New Zealand (23%).

Gender also influenced perspective: women favored romantic or scenic European locales like Amalfi (20%) and Provence (12%), while men leaned toward more adventurous destinations such as Kyoto (11%) and Machu Picchu (5%).

Taken together, these choices reflect how travelers approach gifting and recommendation: with thought, intention and imagination.

Winter Travel Outlook: Confidence, Connection and Curiosity

The results of the Fall 2025 Global Rescue Traveler Sentiment and Safety Survey point to a confident, resilient travel community. Despite the challenges of recent years, the world’s explorers remain committed to travel as a form of renewal, discovery and connection.

Winter, once considered a quieter season for tourism, is now synonymous with movement. From Christmas markets in Europe to ski escapes in Japan or summer adventures in New Zealand’s southern hemisphere, travelers are embracing the season as a time to reconnect with the world and with each other.

And while global travelers differ in where they go or whom they bring, the message is clear: travel remains one of the most meaningful gifts we can give or receive.
